The Session

An elder’s primary role is to shepherd our congregation (1 Peter 5:1-5). This works out in the functions of leadership, government, spiritual discernment and discipline. Peter insists that elders embody the wisdom, character, and humility of Jesus: “not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” (v.3). The qualifications of an elder are described in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and Acts 6.

The group of elders is a representative body, called the Session. The Session leads and make decisions for our church via committees in each ministry area:

• The Steering Committee includes one representative from each of the Sessions’ other committees and serves as a central hub for coordination across all committee activities. Its primary responsibilities include communication, strategic planning, and supporting the Senior Pastor.
• The Ministry Support Committee oversees the church’s administrative and organizational functions, including diaconate oversight of facilities and finances, Board of Women oversight, and personnel/HR matters. It also manages the new officer process and serves as the liaison for denominational matters. The committee also supports communication and connections within the church community.
• The Multiplication Committee focuses on church planting. Its responsibilities include overseeing church plants and guiding the recruitment, training, and placement of planters, interns, and assistant pastors.
• The Worship Committee plans and oversees corporate worship services, as well as the children’s, adult, and seasonal choral programs. It also coordinates prayer ministries and oversees the administration of the sacraments.
• The Formation Committee oversees the adult, youth, and children’s ministries, as well as the Capital Fellows Program and The Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation and Culture.
• The Care Committee oversees the congregation’s pastoral care, including the Care team, Senior Saints ministry, lay counseling, and support groups. It also coordinates care for major life events such as weddings and funerals and oversees community groups and shepherding.
• The Missions Committee oversees the church’s outreach efforts, including support for global mission partners and coordination of local evangelism. It also manages local mercy ministries that meet practical needs within the community. Together, these efforts extend the church’s gospel impact both globally and locally.
