Brothers in Christ is a monthly breakfast for the men of MPC to get together for food, faith, and fellowship. At our April meeting, we’ll discuss the topic: Balancing Work, Life, and Church with a panel including Loren Chen, Cabell Hobbs, John Kyle, and Louis Tucker.

Many men are struggling with finding a work-life balance. Then they join a church. Now there’s another ball to juggle, another plate to spin: serving in the church. It’s not just about finding a work-life balance anymore, but about finding a “work-life-church” balance.

We try to balance our lives like a spreadsheet, making sure each “department” (work, family, church) gets its fair share of resources; but Christ doesn’t want to be a department: He wants to be the king of the whole firm.

Jesus addresses the problem in the gospel of Luke with the story of Mary and Martha. Martha is “distracted with much serving”, “anxious and troubled”, even as she’s doing something good — serving Jesus dinner. Rather than helping her with time management tips to get less stressed out with serving, Jesus tells her that one thing is necessary: sitting at his feet and listening to his teaching.

How does this solve the work-life-church balance problem? That’s what the panel is about! We’ll hear from four MPC members about how putting Jesus first is the key to “balancing” work, life, serving in the church, and everything else — even finding rest.
