The Senior Accountant is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting and budgeting. This position will be responsible for applying sound accounting principles and procedures in analyzing and reviewing financial information, preparing accurate and timely financial reports, preparing accurate and timely account reconciliations, assisting with the annual budget and ensuring appropriate accounting controls are followed. This position also maintains restricted fund records, records entries, and completes grant reporting requirements. Provides oversight and management of an external accounting vendor.
This position is a hands-on position that supervises two staff and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
General Accounting and Financial Support: Perform month-end accounting close functions to include preparing and analyzing recurring and non-recurring journal entries including monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, and recording of adjusting and reclassification journal entries. Perform monthly account reconciliation on asset, liability, net asset, restricted funds, revenue and expense accounts, providing follow-up and documentation of significant variances. Assist in preparation of monthly reports and accompanying schedules, worksheets, and narratives, including Budget vs. Actual variance analysis. Perform research and provide relevant support on financial and accounting related matters including responding to requests from internal and external customers. Preparation of year-end external audit schedules. Conduct regular ledger maintenance, including scheduling of reports, and maintenance of reporting trees.
Restricted Revenue: Support restricted funds/grant reporting requirements including analysis of award terms and conditions and specified guidelines, as well as spending restrictions and reporting requirements. Set up and ongoing analysis to facilitate compliance, including coding of expenses to ensure cost capture.
Budgeting: Coordinate annual budgeting process including training and maintenance of budget software. Perform monthly analysis for all budget centers to monitor budget compliance.
Investments: Oversee recording of PFM investments activity and reconciliation of cash accounts. Work closely with the external vendor to ensure entries are timely recorded and in accordance with GAAP.
People Smart: Coach, mentor and develop all direct reports for optimal performance. Become an active participant in your employee’s performance journal which will provide on-going feedback. Facilitate annual PDPs and provide regular feedback. Recommend continuing education
Minimum years of relevant experience: 7+ years’ experience with increasing level of responsibility in a financial setting
Education: BS in Finance or Accounting; CPA preferred.
Knowledge areas: Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor, and deliver multiple simultaneous projects in a timely manner; knowledge of current Financial standards and guidelines for 501(c) 3; ability to delegate, direct, and coach for performance
Computer/Technology Skills: Advanced Excel skills (V-Lookups, Pivot Tables, etc.) required; Salesforce (NGOC) or other fundraising databases is a plus.
Communication Skills: Excellent writing and editorial skills; approachable, strong collaboration skills
Percentage of travel required: 5%+
Other Skills: Strong strategic planning, analysis and reporting skills; Experience interacting with vendors and volunteers to plan and accomplish projects.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
